Andy Murray secured a place in the quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells after Nicolas Almagro had to retire injured.
The fourth seeded Scot was comfortably leading the clash 6-2 1-0 when the Spaniard had to withdraw due to a left ankle injury.
Murray will now go through to face sixth-seed Robin Soderling, who beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets, in the last eight.
The big shock of the round came when Serbian second seed Novak Djokovic was dumped out 7-5 6-3 by Croat 20th seed Ivan Ljubicic.
"I had a lot of opportunities and I didn't use many of them," said Djokovic.
"My execution was very bad and he played well when he needed to."
Third seed Rafael Nadal overcame home favourite John Isner 7-5 3-6 6-3 to set up a a quarter-final against the Czech Republic's Tomas Berdych, who thrashed Serbia's Viktor Troicki 6-1 6-3.
