City close in on fourth with win

by Toni Cuddihy , 21 March 2010

Manchester City's hopes of Champions League qualification next season received a boost with a 2-1 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday.

Roberto Mancini's side went ahead only six minutes into the game.

The move started in the City box, as Kolo Toure hooked away a shot by Zoltan Gera, who had poked past Shay Given. The ball fell to Craig Bellamy who thumped the ball against Mark Schwarzer's post, leaving Santa Cruz with the easiest of tap-ins.

The match lacked the bite of Fulham's brilliant reversal against Juventus at the Cottage last Thursday, with Roy Hodgson's men unable to trouble their wealthy opponents.

The Cottagers' task was made all the tougher in the 35th minute. Carlos Tevez controlled Craig Bellamy's centre superbly before turning defender Chris Smalling and finishing brilliantly.

Fulham did get back into the game when Gareth Barry was penalised for handling inside the box. Danny Murphy stepped up to convert the penalty but the Londoners could not build on that goal and City gathered all three points.
