SPL champions Rangers bagged another victory on Saturday as they downed Dundee Unietd 2-1 at Tannadice.
The Gers have enjoyed the last seven days, a week that has seen them retain their title and seen their place in next season’s Champions League group stages secured courtesy of Lyon’s European elimination. And their fans were in fine voice again just two minutes into this encounter as Kris Boyd fired home his 100th league goal for the club.
A much-changed visitors side started in attacking mode and were immediately rewarded as John Fleck barged down on the United area before laying a short pass into Boyd’s path and the former Kilmarnock man put a right-foot effort quickly beyond Dusan Pernis.
United then lost Danny Cadamarteri to a shoulder injury, Ryan Dow coming on, and they almost lost a second goal when Fleck’s goal-bound shot was just deflected wide off of Gary Kenneth.
Nacho Novo and Boyd then failed to double the champions’ lead with chances, but the Spaniard proved to be the man who eventually did make it two in the 41st minute. He eased past Sean Dillon and slotted the ball into the far corner.
Craig Hill was then lucky not to concede a penalty when he appeared to foul Boyd in the area, but the Gers still had a thoroughly deserved and comfortable lead at half-time.
After the break, Steven Smith’s 25-yard free-kick was only curled into the arms of Pernis, while United had a rare chance when Kevin Smith’s header proved a wasteful finish to a David Robertson cross.
Damian Casalinuovo then shot over the crossbar, while at the other end Kirk Broadfoot volleyed narrowly past the upright.
With ten minutes left United did grab a lifeline when Argentine Casalinuovo directed a header from Dow’s corner past Neil Alexander.
However, they could not find it in them to grab an equaliser and the game ended with the champions having taken another victory.
