Farney chief defends County Board

by setanta.com staff , 31 August 2010

Amid fierce criticism from within the county, Monaghan chairman Paul Curran has defended the county board's stance following Seamus McEnaney's departure.

The man known as ‘Banty’ left his role as manager of the county’s senior footballers after six years at the helm last week after club delegates voted 29-19 in favour of seeking nominations for the post.

His departure has left the county’s fans unhappy and the players were also believed to be keen for him to remain on after several years of progression.
But Curran has stated that last week’s vote indicated that McEnaney had gotten all he can out of the current squad and that the time had arrived for a new face.

"As a result of nominations the clubs of Monaghan sent a very clear signal that this management team has got the maximum out of this bunch of players," he said in the Irish News.

"There is a strong mood for change. That's it. That's not trying to be disrespectful. Maybe it's time for a change. Maybe it's time for a fresh voice and a fresh face.

"My focus is putting structures in place at underage so that we have a regular supply of players and not what we've had over the last few years, a staggered supply.

"If Seamus had been able to replace some of these players they wouldn't have had to go on for so long and we wouldn't have so many players thinking of retiring right now. At some point we have to face these problems and we may be facing that problem right now."

McEnaney’s men eased past Armagh and Fermanagh in the Ulster Championship this year, but were well beaten by Tyrone in the provincial final and then went down to eventual semi-finalists Kildare when they entered the qualifiers.
