Kildare chief desperate for McGeeney stay

by setanta.com staff , 31 August 2010

Kildare hope that Kieran McGeeney will continue in charge of the county after Sunday’s All-Ireland seni-final defeat.

The former Armagh star, who won an All-Ireland as an Orchard County player in 2002, saw an end come to his three-year-term when Down edged the Lilywhites in Sunday’s semi-final. However, county chairman Padraig Ashe is keen for him to commit to further time with the Leinster side.

Kildare have made steady improvement under McGeeney, reaching All-Ireland quarter-finals in 2008 and 2009 when they were just beaten by Cork and Tyrone respectively.

This year, they started their Championship campaign poorly when exiting to Louth at the quarter-final stage in Leinster, but bounced back to beat Antrim (after a replay), Leitrim, Derry and Monaghan in the All-Ireland qualifiers and Meath in the quarter-final before the Down loss.

"Kieran was appointed for a three-year term and this is the final year of it," Ashe was quoted as saying in the Irish Examiner.

"I'm on record since I became chairman of the Kildare County Board last year that no stone would be left unturned to keep this management in place. That still stands and that's what we'd hope would happen."

Meanwhile, Ashe has also called for technology to be utilised in the Championship after a Kildare kick that went over the bar was ruled wide and Down later scored a goal from a square ball in Sunday’s controversial semi.

"It can start with the All-Ireland championships and I think all the stadia are well equipped to do that,” Ashe said on the issue.

"This would do away with all the controversies that have been going on this summer.

"Having been on the receiving end of it, we can now respect how Louth felt earlier on in the summer. It’s not like the technology isn’t there. On Sunday when Alan Smith’s shot was ruled wide, the replay on the big screen in the stadium showed it went over.

“Everybody could see it instantly. The same with Benny Coulter’s goal, there was a replay straight away of it and everyone could see he was in the square.

"The technology is readily available to see whether disputed scores should be allowed. It doesn’t take long to review scores. Of course officials are not going to see everything and you have to allow for human error. It’s very frustrating for everyone.

"There’s a major question mark when nearly 30,000 Kildare fans go home feeling aggrieved. The team and management have put in a massive effort, and it’s disappointing when things like that go against them.

"The goal being awarded was harder to take as you would think a square ball can be clearly spotted. I know Pat McEnaney is a very experienced referee and had experienced officials with him, with Joe McQuillan, an inter-county referee acting as an umpire. It’s just difficult to understand it all."

However, he graciously concluded: "We are beaten, Down are in the All-Ireland final and that’s it. The score is still the same, 1-16 to 1-14 in Down’s favour.

“We wish (manager) James McCartan and his Down team all the best in the All-Ireland final."
