Wolverhampton Wanderes scored three times in extra-time to beat Notts County 4-2 and reach the fourth round of the Carling Cup.
Former West Bromwich Albion striker Lee Hughes took great delight in giving the League One side the lead, but Nenad Milijas secured extra-time from the penalty spot after Liam Chilvers was sent off for the Magpies.
Steven Fletcher and Kevin Doyle both came off the bench over the course of the game for Wolves, and they scored three between them in the additional 30 to make sure that Kevin Smith’s County goal was scant consolation.
There were no goals in the first 45 minutes at Molineux, though Hughes had one ruled out for offside as he he headed in Ben Davies’ free from an offside position.
Wayne Hennessey later saved a curling effort from Hughes, but the striker finally got one that counted on 57 minutes as he sent a looping header beyond the Wales goalkeeper from Mike Edwards’ cross.
Kevin Foley shot just wide as Wolves tried to hit back before Hennessey saved an effort that could have been a killer goal from Hughes.
Instead the next goal came from Wolves as Chilvers hauled back Christophe Berra in the area and was dismissed. Serbian midfielder Milijas rammed the penalty into the roof of the net to bring about the extras.
And Wolves netted just two minutes into them as Fletcher – on for Marcus Bent – was picked out by Doyle – on for Sylvan Ebanks-Blake – and the Scot made no mistake.
Doyle then got his first club goal of the season just before half-time of extra-time, the industrious Irishman setting up Fletcher again, only for Rob Burch to save from the former Burnley man. Doyle rammed home the rebound to leave Wolves looking good.
Smith – who had seen Hennseesy deny a fine effort earlier in extra-time – kept the tie alive with six minutes left when he headed in a cross from Craig Westcarr, but Doyle sealed the win with a 12-yard finish with one minute to go.
