Liverpool remain unbeaten in Group K of the Europa League following a 0-0 draw with Napoli on Thursday night.
Roy Hodgson opted to leave Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres in Liverpool for the match with the manager electing to field a team of relative youngsters and fringe players.
Those that took to the pitch were determined to prove their worth and they produced a defiant display against a Napoli side that had several chances to put the match to bed.
Marek Hamsik went closest for the home side as his shot was cleared of the line by Paul Konchesky just moments before the break. There were protests from some Napoli players but replays proved inconclusive as to whether the ball had actually crossed into the goal.
While Liverpool looked more confident after the break it was Napoli who created the better chances, with Edinson Cavani going close twice.
The visitors also had chances with Ryan Babel spurning a brilliant opportunity when his shot went straight at the goalkeeper, before David Ngog was denied by Salvatore Aronica.
As the clock ticked down it was clear both sides were happy to settle for the draw and that is how it ended with Liverpool staying top of the Group.
