Stevenage produce Toon shock

by Setanta Staff , 08 January 2011

Newcastle have fallen to a shock FA Cup defeat, losing their third round clash at League Two Stevenage 3-1.

A Mike Williamson own-goal was quickly followed by a fine strike from Michael Bostwick early in the second period, before Newcastle had Cheik Tiote sent-off.

A stunning Joey Barton strike saw Newcastle pull one back in injury time, but Stevenage immediately went up the other end and netted through Peter Winn.

Barton saw an early effort from a Wayne Routledge cross saved by Stevenage keeper Chris Day.

The hosts had an excellent chance to go ahead inside the opening 10 minutes, when Mark Roberts failed to connect properly from six yards following Winn's corner.

The chance for Roberts commenced a brief period of Stevenage enjoying the upper hand, though in the first half-hour overall, the visitors had more possession.

However, the home side went very close went Tim Krul did superbly to tip a  Bostwick drive from the edge of the box wide.

Stevenage went ahead five minutes into second period, when Stacy Long shot from 20 yards out, the effort striking Williamson and leaving Krul with no chance.

Kevin Nolan almost replied immediately, his stinging drive well stopped by Day.

Stevenage, though, soon went two-up through Bostwick, who collected the ball following a 50-50 on the edge of the Newcastle box and drove a shot in off Krul’s post.

The League Two side could have gone three-up when Chris Beardsley was granted a free header from a corner, but he failed to make good contact and Newcastle cleared.

The Premier League outfit went down to 10 men after 71 minutes, as Tiote was dismissed, despite winning the ball, for a lunge at Jon Ashton.

Ashton was forced to hack clear after Day dropped a Barton free-kick, before Winn wasted a fine chance to seal the victory for Stevenage, side-footing wide after a poor clearance from Krul.

Barton looked to have set up a nervy injury when he scored with a superb drive in off the Stevenage crossbar.

However, John Mousinho played in Winn to turn in the goal that ensured Stevenage enjoyed their greatest day.
