Defoe brace sinks Charlton

by setanta.com staff , 09 January 2011

Tottenham set up a meeting with Fulham at Craven Cottage in the FA Cup fourth round, after a 3-0 win over Charlton.

Jermain Defoe scored twice as Harry Redknapp's men cruised to victory over the League One side in the third round tie at White Hart Lane, after debutant Andros Townsend had opened the scoring just after half-time.

The opening goal came just under four minutes into the second-half when Townsend took Sandro's pass, and shot past Charlton goalkeeper Rob Elliot from 20 yards. It was a deserved goal for the 19-year-old winger, who has just come back from a loan spell at Ipswich.

Spurs went 2-0 up just before the hour thanks to former Addicks' old boy Defoe.

The England striker was set up by Niko Kranjcar, and, after feigning to shoot initially, scored past Eliot with an 18-yard drive against the club where he began his career.

Two minutes later, Defoe scored his fifth goal of the season, after his first shot had been blocked by Eliot.

Tottenham goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini tipped over a shot from Charlton substitute Kyel Reid with 15 minutes to go, as the Premier League side relaxed, and the Italian also deflected over Akpo Sodje's 18-yard strike in the last moments of the game.
