Harry Redknapp admitted nothing went right for his Tottenham Hotspur side as they succumbed to a 4-0 hiding by Real Madrid on Tuesday.
The result leaves Spurs all but eliminated from the Champions League ahead of next week’s quarter-final second leg, following a night when Aaron Lennon was lost to illness just before kick-off at the Bernabeu and Peter Crouch was sent off in the first quarter of an hour.
Emmanuel Adebayor had already put Spurs behind at that stage, and the former Arsenal man would score a second in the second half before Angel Di Maria and Cristiano Ronaldo completed the Madrid mauling.
Jermaine Jenas replaced Lennon in the starting line-up, with Redknapp telling Sky Sports: "We lost Aaron Lennon a minute before kick-off, he didn't feel well, just said he had no energy, no strength. We had to change the team just as we were leaving the dressing room.
"Then we went a goal down and got Crouchy sent off.
"It's difficult to come here with 11 men let alone to come and play with 10."
On Crouch’s two yellow cards in six minutes, Redknapp reasoned: "He's certainly not one for getting red cards, but I've not seen it.
"To get to half-time like we did (only 1-0 down), I thought we could hang in there and would have a chance, but then our legs ran out a bit.
"It was one of those days where anything that could have gone wrong did go wrong."
Redknapp also revealed that Gareth Bale struggled with cramp for much of the second half and Vedran Corluka, who was replaced by Sebastian Bassong, was forced to come off with an ankle problem.
Redknapp’s captain Michael Dawson said the sending-off of his England team-mate Crouch made the night all the more difficult for the visitors.
"We go away disappointed, we've got to pick ourselves up because we've got to put in a performance next week," Dawson said.
"After going down to 10 men early on it was so difficult.
"We defended well after giving the early goal away, we got blocks in. To give another goal away was disappointing and then they scored two top-class goals.
"The White Hart Lane faithful will be there next Wednesday and we've got to go out and give it our all."
However, despite the size of Real’s lead their former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso insisted that the tie is not over. The Spaniard said: "We have seen so many great comebacks. Hopefully this won't be the case, but we have to be ready.
"The result is fantastic but the tie is not won yet."
