Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel believes Manuel Neuer is the perfect man to replace Edwin van der Sar at Old Trafford.
The Dutch veteran has confirmed that he will be retiring at the end of the current campaign and a number of names have been mentioned as possible successors to the 40-year-old.
Neuer put in a world-class performance even though the Red Devils beat Schalke 2-0 in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday night, and reports suggest that Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to talk to the 25-year-old about his future.
The Gelsenkirchen-born star has made it clear that he will not be extending his contract with his current employers and will be leaving at the end of the season, with Bayern Munich in pole position to secure his services.
But Schmeichel believes that United should try to acquire the talented custodian as he would be a perfect fit for the north west giants.
"He is probably the best goalkeeper in the world," he told Sky Sports.
"He is 25 years of age. He's been captain for that team for a number of years. He is very mature in the way he plays.
"He doesn't make mistakes - I haven't seen him make a single mistake - and the way he played yesterday, he wasn't lucky in the way that he saved the shots and one-on-ones, it was very calculated.
"I just thought his overall game was fantastic and absolutely well-suited for Manchester United."
