Uefa have confirmed that they have opened disciplinary cases against both Real Madrid and Barcelona after Wednesday’s controversial encounter.
Two Lionel Messi goals gave Barca a 2-0 win at the Bernabeu in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final. However, the game made plenty of other headlines with Real’s Pepe sent off for a high challenge on Daniel Alves and Barca sub goalkeeper Jose Pinto dismissed for his part in a half-time melee.
Real boss Jose Mourinho was then sent to the stands after challenging the Pepe decision and he later described the game as the’ scandal of the Bernabeu’ amid other conspiratorial suggestions, with Uefa unhappy at this as well as the actions of the home supporters on what proved a very fiery night in Madrid.
A Thursday statement on the Uefa website read: “Following last night's Uefa Champions League semi-final first leg between Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona, Uefa has opened the following disciplinary cases against the clubs.
“The case against Real Madrid is in relation to the throwing of missiles, a pitch invasion, the red card shown to Pepe, the dismissal of coach Jose Mourinho, as well as the inappropriate statement given by Mr Mourinho to the media after the match (Uefa Disciplinary Regulations, Article 5 – Principles of conduct).
“The case against Barcelona regards the red card administered to Jose Pinto.”
Both clubs’ cases will be heard by Uefa’s Control and Disciplinary Body on Friday May 6, three days after the second leg at Camp Nou.
