UEFA dismiss Barca/Real complaints

by Tony Cuddihy , 02 May 2011

UEFA have rejected complaints from both Barcelona and Real Madrid after last week's controversial Champions League tie between the two teams.

Madrid announced last Thursday that they were reporting their rivals for 'unsportsmanlike behaviour,' this coming after Barcelona said they were reporting Jose Mourinho for his post-match comments in the wake of the Catalans' 2-0 win.

The disciplinary committee of UEFA will examine five charges against Madrid on Friday, including one related to the sending off of their manager Mourinho and another regarding his comments afterwards, and they will also look at the charge against Barcelona's substitute goalkeeper Jose Pinto.

Pinto was sent off in a half-time melee.

A UEFA statement read: "UEFA has announced today that the vice-chairman of the UEFA control and disciplinary body, as a judge sitting alone, has rejected both the protests lodged by Real Madrid CF and the complaint made by FC Barcelona following the UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg between the two clubs last Wednesday.

"The protests lodged by Madrid, against the behaviour of the Barcelona players during the match and against the red card shown to Pepe, are rejected.

"In the case of the behaviour of the Barcelona players, it was deemed that there was no common strategy to provoke, while in the case of Pepe, the referee's factual decision is upheld. As a result, Pepe is suspended for the second leg on Tuesday."
