Ameobi sends Toon through

Sammy Ameobi netted in extra time to seal a 2-1 victory for Newcastle United over Scunthorpe United in the second round of the Carling Cup.

Chris Dagnell scored in the first half for the League One side, but visitors Newcastle equalised through Ryan Taylor's free-kick 10 minutes from the end of normal time, before Ameobi's scored from 20 yards to send Alan Pardew's side through.

Dagnell gave the hosts a deserved lead after 15 minutes, finishing from close range after Newcastle had failed to adequately deal with a corner.

Tim Krul had to produce a number of good saves to ensure that Newcastle trailed by just a single goal at the break.

The away side improved after the interval, with Peter Lovenkrands missing two good chances and Leon Best having a goal ruled out for offside.

Taylor, though, found an equaliser, curling home an excellent free-kick.

Chances were few and far between in extra time, but Ameobi saved Newcastle from penalties when he cut inside and netted with a superb drive from the edge of the box, with eight minutes of extra time to go.
