Rooney wins Euro ban appeal

by Setanta Staff , 08 December 2011 Rooney wins Euro ban appeal

Wayne Rooney's Euro 2012 suspension has been reduced to two games by UEFA on appeal.

Rooney had been originally banned for three games - which would have ruled him out of all of the Three Lions' group matches at next summer's tournament in Poland and Ukraine - following his red card for kicking out at Miodrag Dzudovic in the final qualifier game against Montenegro on October 7.

However, following Rooney's appeal hearing in Nyon, Switzerland, on Thursday morning, UEFA agreed to cut the ban to two games which means Three Lions coach Fabio Capello can call on his star player for the final group match against hosts Ukraine in Donetsk.

The third match ban has been suspended for four years which means it will be added to any suspension Rooney picks up if he is sent off playing in a UEFA competition for either England or Manchester United during that time period.

It is thought the presence of Rooney, Capello and Club England managing director Adrian Bevington before the UEFA Appeals Body helped boost the United man's case.
