Man United claw a point

by Setanta Staff , 05 February 2012

Manchester United recovered a three-goal deficit to draw 3-3 with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea were 3-0 up after 50 minutes thanks to a Jonny Evans own goal, a Juan Mata volley and a David Luiz header.

However, Wayne Rooney netted two penalties before Javier Hernandez earned United a point with an 83rd minute header.

United remain in second place in the Premier League, two points behind leaders Manchester City.

Chelsea took the lead after 34 minutes, thanks to an Evans' own goal.
Daniel Sturridge was the creator, running at Patrice Evra into the box and pulling the ball back from an acute angle.

United goalkeeper David De Gea stuck out an instinctive boot, and the ball deflected onto Evans and into the net.

Chelsea went two up seconds into the second half through Mata. It was a goal made in Spain, Fernando Torres finding his compatriot at the back post after being allowed space by Evra, and Mata thrashed in a volley that De Gea could only watch whistle into his goal.

Chelsea amazingly went three up in the 50th minute, with Luiz heading Mata's corner to the near post off Rio Ferdinand and into De Gea's goal.

United gained a foothold in the game in the 57th minute when referee Howard Webb pointed to the spot after ruling Sturridge had tripped Evra on the left-hand side of the Chelsea box.

Rooney converted past Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech, and then Webb then gave his second penalty of the afternoon in the 68th minute after Branislav Ivanovic tripped Danny Welbeck in the box.

United were coming at Chelsea in waves now, and Hernandez levelled the scores in the 83rd minute with a close-range header from Giggs' chipped up cross from the right, after the 38-year-old had recovered the second ball following Cech's save from Rooney's snapshot.

United were indebted to De Gea for a magnificent save in the final minute. Mata's shot from distance was headed straight for the top corner, but the young Spaniard somehow managed to get fingertips to the ball to claw it round the post.
