Roberto Martinez has hailed the attitude of Hugo Rodallega and says the striker can help Wigan stay up.

Rodallega says he will leave Wigan in the summer and would have gone in the January transfer window had Wigan accepted bids from QPR, Tottenham or Fulham.

However he will now stay for rest of the season and Martinez says that is good news regards the fight for survival.

"It's a massive bonus having him still here and it was a great moment for us when the window closed," Martinez revealed. "Although we have to be realistic, he can play a big role over the rest of the season for us.

"It's important that everything is sorted now the window has closed because, during it, there are so many distractions. It is difficult to be focused.

"But Hugo's been working hard to help the team.

"He showed against Everton that he intends to carry on like that."

Martinez was delighted with the attitude shown by the striker when he came on against Everton at the weekend and says it bodes well for the rest of the season.

"Seeing Hugo come on like he did, in that manner, when he showed a real intent to play for Wigan and to help the team, was brilliant," he added.

"That's the attitude we all need to have."
