Baines hails January recruits

by Setanta Staff , 10 February 2012

Everton defender Leighton Baines feels the club's January signings have provided a timely boost for the remainder of the campaign.

Boss David Moyes snapped up Croatian international Nikica Jelavic in a £5.5million deal from SPL side Rangers on deadline day, while midfielder Darron Gibson secured a permanent switch to Goodison Park from Manchester United earlier in the transfer window.

Moyes also sealed a short-term loan deal for Landon Donovan as well as securing the services of Steven Pienaar on loan from Spurs for the rest of the season.

Gibson has already established himself in the Everton midfield, while Pienaar made over 100 appearances for Everton in his first spell with the club and Donovan is in his second loan stay at Goodison Park.

Jelavic arrives with an impressive goal scoring record in Scotland and Baines insists the new arrivals will help Everton push up the table in the second half of the season.

He told Everton TV: "I think [January's transfer dealings] lifted everyone associated with the club, it certainly did from what we see within the club, it gave everyone a boost.

"It was massive, in particular, what that 24 hours did for us with the two new lads coming in [on deadline day] and the win over Manchester City.

"We needed it and it does lift people. It is hard to articulate exactly why that is at times but to get the new bodies in really helped.

"It was a productive period for the club and we certainly feel as though we are on the up again."
