Racing Weather Watch

The icy weather in Britain is continuing to hit racing hard and with little sign of conditions improving the outlook does not look good for the weekend.

Friday

Kempton
has been given the all clear for Friday's 'Jumpers Bumpers' card, but otherwise the cold snap is continuing to dodge the racing calendar.

With officials already having switched plans from the originally-scheduled National Hunt card, an 8am inspection on Friday morning gave the green light for an all-weather card to go ahead in spite of 4 cm of additional snow having fallen on Thursday evening and night.

Clerk of the course Barney Clifford praised his team for getting the meeting on, saying: "We had 4cm of snow but we've been power harrowing the track and so far we are raceable.

"We will continue to do that and at this stage there is nothing to worry us."

There will be no racing at Bangor after the track was found to be frozen at an inspection on Thursday.

Temperatures have struggled to get above freezing all week and another cold night proved the nail in the coffin with clerk of the course Andrew Morris left with no choice but to abandon.

"The temperature reached minus 4C overnight and it is still minus 2C now," he said.

"We're not forecast to get above 2C from now until the end of racing tomorrow. There is also the threat of snow so there is nothing in the forecast to suggest we have any conceivable chance of racing."

Saturday

Newbury
have been forced to call off Betfair Super Saturday because of snow.

The Berkshire course had looked at having another inspection on race day, but have now conceded that - after 4cm of Thursday night snowfall - there is no chance of what had looked a thrilling card going ahead.

Officials are in talks with the British Horseracing Authority as they look to save the meeting's major races.

"We've had to abandon," said clerk of the course Richard Osgood.

"There's snow on the covers and there is no predicted rise in temperatures or rain which would help shift it.

"There have been preliminary discussions about restaging the fixture and we are looking to hold it next week but at this stage I know nothing more than that."

Uttoxeter's card was called off following a 1.30pm inspection on Thursday.

The course is currently under a blanket of snow and with the ground frozen underneath it was decided to make a decision rather than carry out a meaningless inspection on Friday.

"There's still snow on the ground and significant frost which has been there since January 31," clerk of the course Charlie Moore said.

"Whatever sleet, snow or rain might come in the next 12 hours, there will be an insufficient rise in temperatures to get the level of frost out of the ground in time for the course to be safe to race.

"Added to that we will probably get a minus 4C or minus 5C frost tomorrow night so any thaw that did happen would be scuppered."

Frost has also claimed Saturday's meeting at Warwick.

Snow remains on parts of the ground, while the track is frozen in places and with little improvement expected clerk of the course Sulekha Varma has decided to abandon.

"We just had a walk round the track and there's no improvement. We have barely got above freezing today and there is still a fair part of the course covered in snow and the majority is frozen," she said.

"It is forecast to drop to minus 5C tonight so even if temperatures do rise, there would be insufficient time for the track to thaw."

Sunday

Hereford are not confident about their National Hunt fixture beating the weather after calling for a second inspection.

One check has already talen place on Friday morning and rain and a mild night has given clerk of the course Keith Ottesen some confidence, though he does admit that the forecast is not good.

"It didn't drop below zero all night and we had rain, not snow, which helped shift most of the frozen areas, although there are still a few frozen patches," said Ottesen.

"It could be a false dawn as it is supposed to be very cold tonight but we couldn't call it off now.

"It rests on hold cold it gets tonight really."

Exeter will also inspect on race day as frost and sub-zero temperatures threaten to kill off plans for the card on a course that is currently raceable.

"We had no frost last night and we had rain rather than snow," said clerk of the course Barry Johnson.

"We've called an 8am precautionary inspection to keep everyone ahead of the game.

"It could be minus 4C tonight and Saturday night but the daytime temperatures give us a chance.

"It depends how quick the temperature rises."

Southwell, meanwhile, will stage a 'bumper for jumpers' card on the all-weather track.

The British Horseracing Authority have made the decision to ensure there is some racing on Sunday given the icy conditions around the country.

It's an indication of the need to provide opportunities for those horses that have missed out as a result of the cold snap," said BHA spokesman John Maxse on Wednesday.
