Dreadful Arsenal beaten by Milan

by Tony Cuddihy , 15 February 2012

Arsenal's hopes of progressing in this year's Champions League seem to be over, after they lost 4-0 to AC Milan in the last 16, first leg clash at the San Siro.

Kevin Prince Boateng, Robinho (2) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic were on the scoresheet for Max Allegri's side.

The opener, when it came, was quite stunning.

Clarence Seedorf had just left the pitch injured when Antonio Nocerino played the ball to Boateng, who swivelled before lashing the ball first time past Wojciech Szczesny.

Arsenal's only chance of the half came shortly afterwards, when Laurent Koscielny - who would later go off injured himself - headed Robin van Persie's free-kick straight into the arms of Abbiati.

Milan's second came when Ibrahimovic beat the off-side trap to cross for Robinho, who headed past the Arsenal stopper.

The match was ended as a contest shortly after the start of the second half. Ibrahimovic's pass to Robinho was missed by Vermaelen, who slipped, and the Brazilian coolly slotted home.

Arsenal's best chance came 65 minutes into the game when Thierry Henry - playing the final game of his loan spell - brilliantly flicked Alex Song's pass into the path of van Persie, but Abbiati produced a stunning save.

Shortly afterwards it was 4-0 when Djourou clearly fouled Ibrahimovic, the Swede picking himself up to hammer home the penalty.

"We didn't have the best of games but you have to give credit to Milan. They punished us on every occasion and scored some quality goals," Wenger told ITV.

"They deserved to win. It's very disappointing day for us and hopefully we can pick ourselves up and challenge them in the second leg."
