Eredivisie: McClaren chasing title comeback

by Ben Blackmore , 22 March 2009

Steve McClaren inched back into the title race on Sunday as FC Twente moved within nine points of AZ Alkmaar.

Alkmaar still look firm favourites but they could only draw 0-0 at home with Feyenoord at The DSB Stadion.

McClaren’s Twente side took full advantage, beating 10-man Groningen 2-1 at The Arke Stadion.

Andreas Granqvist saw red inside the opening 10 minutes for Groningen, who them conceded on 34 minutes thanks to Eljero Elia’s strike.

Peter Wisgerhof then made things safe before Marcus Berg grabbed a consolation for the visitors.

Ajax sit third, three points behind Twente, after a routine 3-0 triumph away at NAC Breda.

Thomas Vermaelen put the Dutch giants on their way, before Gregory van der Wiel and Luis Suarez wrapped things up in the second half.

At the bottom, Volendam remain routed to the base of the pack after a 0-0 draw at home to Utrecht, while Roda JC beat Ado Den Haag 2-0 thanks to Andres Oper and Cisse Sekou.
