League Two: Hatters down and out?

by setanta.com staff , 31 March 2009

Aldershot 1 Chesterfield 1

Jake Robinson’s fourth goal in an Aldershot shirt ended The Shots' two-match losing run.

Chesterfield stunned the home crowd when they grabbed a seventh minute lead when Peter Till split the defence wide open with a through ball for Jack Lester to run on and bury the ball past Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz for his 22nd goal of the campaign.

Till nearly got on the scoresheet himself with a left-foot drive that whistled just past the post while the home side came close when Robinson saw his effort cleared off the line just before the break.

But the on-loan Brighton striker wasn’t to be denied seven minutes after the break when he got on the end of Anthony Charles' flick to fire home from close range.

Spireites midfielder Derek Niven smashed a volley against a post in the closing minutes but that would have been harsh on the hosts.

Exeter 1 Port Vale 0

Luke Prosser’s own goal boosted Exeter’s automatic promotion hopes despite The Grecians playing more than an hour with just ten men.

City were rocked within 21 minutes when defender Danny Seaborne stupidly got himself sent off for two bookings after a foul on Scott Brown and then petulantly kicking the ball away.

But Paul Tisdale’s men were in front five minutes later when veteran striker Marcus Stewart’s header was bundled into his own net by the unfortunate Prosser.

Exeter sat back on their lead but were rarely tested and the closest Vale came was when left-back Paul Edwards rattled the post from 30-yards late on.

Lincoln City 1 Macclesfield 0

Lincoln kept their play-off push alive as Adrian Patulea’s first-half strike was enough to condemn Macclesfield to their fifth consecutive defeat.

Lincoln took the lead on 27 minutes when Anthony Elding headed Danny N’Guessan’s cross into the path of Adrian Patulea to hammer in his tenth strike of the season.

The goal breathed life into The Imps and Patulea nearly got his second but couldn’t pull the trigger with the ball bouncing inside the box.

But Peter Jackson was indebted to keeper Rob Burch who pulled off a wonder save to keep out former Lincoln striker Simon Yeo’s effort moments after he had come on as a second-half sub.

Luton 2 Rotherham 4

Luton's preparations for Sunday’s trip to Wembley in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final against Scunthorpe were dealt a blow as they slipped to a home defeat to in-form Rotherham.

The Millers, who have only lost once in their last 12 matches, took the lead on 11 minutes through Reuben Reid’s clinical finish for his 17th goal of the season.

Drewe Broughton doubled the advantage on 38 minutes only for Chris Martin to immediately pull one back as he headed in Asa Hall’s cross.

And the goals kept flying in after half-time as Danny Harrison’s header restored Rotherham’s two goal lead only for Hall to again reduce the deficit.

But Millers sub Mark Hudson sealed all three points for Mark Robins' men with a strike three minutes from time.

Wycombe 1 Barnet 1

Wycombe again lost ground in their promotion push as Paul Furlong’s equaliser for Barnet stretched their winless run to six games.

The Chairboys took the lead in sensational style in the 19th minute when Matt Bloomfield released on-loan Bristol City striker John Akinde to emphatically finish from the edge of the box.

Barnet though kept plugging away and got their reward three minutes before half-time when slack marking gave veteran hitman Furlong the space he needed to finish past Jamie Young.

Wycombe piled forward after the break but they found Bees keeper Jake Cole in fine form as he denied Gary Holt, Matt Harrold and Craig Woodman.
